The Community Reconciliation and Consensus Committee, an initiative under the SPARK project, took part today, Sunday, May 25, in a commemorative event marking the tenth anniversary of Almaqatera Massacre—an incident that occurred in 2015 and claimed dozens of lives and left many injured in one of the most harrowing tragedies in Taiz Governorate.
The event, organized by the victims’ families with the support of activists and human rights advocates, featured a symbolic gathering to highlight the ongoing suffering of affected families and to demand justice. Victims’ families and survivors shared powerful testimonies recounting the traumatic moments of the incident and its enduring psychological and societal impact.
In a statement delivered during the event, the Community Reconciliation and Consensus Committee expressed its solidarity with the victims' families and its full support for their demands to incorporate the case into transitional justice processes. This includes official recognition of the incident, holding those responsible accountable, and providing fair and adequate compensation to the victims.
The Committee emphasized that its participation reflects its commitment to supporting social peace and promoting the principles of transitional justice, stressing that commemorating the tragedy is a vital step toward acknowledgment, reparation, and building a more just and humane future.
